Restoration Forestry

Reduction of hazardous fuels around your home will greatly increase the odds that your home will survive a wildfire. Restoration forestry takes this pro-active approach to land stewardship to the next level.

Reviewing research into forest health and fuels reduction revealed the work of Dr. Steve Arno and Dr. Carl Fiedler, co-authors of “Mimicking Nature's Fire: Restoring Fire-Prone Forests in the West”.

Residents of the intermountain west live in a fire-adapted environment that has been largely deprived of the natural force that created it. Dr.'s Arno & Fiedler have developed an new prescription for restoring this imbalance known as the "Comprehensive Treatment".

Rather than focus solely on small diameter removal, known as "thinning from below", the Comprehensive Treatment attempts to emulate natural agents of change. This approach seeks to establish a forest composed of varied age classes, and species, in which fire can once again serve as a beneficial process rather than as a catastrophe.

The Comprehensive Treatment has the potential to generate off-setting revenue, actually reduce the odds of catastrophic loss due to wildfire, and improve property values. The goal of this process is the creation of a sustainable forest that is more resistant to wildfire, insects, and drought.
